  • Here’s how the Hyundai Creta has managed to achieve stellar response despite a global pandemic wreaking havoc in the auto industry Coronavirus has sent the automobile industry into a kind of limbo but the Hyundai Creta seems to be relatively unaffected by it. The Korean carmaker has till date received around 24,000 bookings for it since its launch in mid-March. One can only assume that if the pandemic had not been there, these numbers would have been even higher. Such a response for the Creta can be attributed to two facts. First, the public sentiment for the Creta moniker is quite positive. The previous model was so popular that it created a whole segment and despite its relatively premium positioning, it was considered a value packed purchase. Secondly, the new Creta brings a lot more to the table, not only when compared to the outgoing model but also the Kia Seltos. Also Read: Hyundai Creta 7-Seater: What Can You Expect? The Creta and Seltos are quite similar underneath. They both use the same powertrains and the same chassis. The bodywork of the two and the interiors are totally different though. The Creta offers something that most car buyers in the segment crave - a panoramic sunroof. The Seltos also offers a sunroof, but it doesn’t stretch all the way back till the rear seats. If you are looking to get your hands on a Creta, Hyundai has reopened approximately 850 dealerships and more than a 1000 service centres across the country. So it’s safe to say that if you make a booking now, you will have to wait a bit before taking delivery. Also Read: Hyundai Creta Variants Explained: Which One To Buy? • Equipped with an AMT, is the Triber an even bigger threat to the rivals in terms of value? Renault recently launched the Triber AMT at a premium of Rs 40,000 over its corresponding manual variants. Available in three variants: RXL, RXT and RXZ, the Triber’s top-spec variant is still affordable than a couple of its closest competitors. But does it make a better case for itself than the Maruti Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and the Maruti Ignis? Let’s compare their AMT-equipped versions to get you the answer.   Renault Triber Maruti Suzuki Swift Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Maruti Suzuki Ignis Engine  1.0-litre, 3-cylinder 1.2-litre, 4 cylinder 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder 1.2-litre, 4 cylinder Power  72PS 83PS 83PS 83PS Torque  96Nm 113Nm 113Nm 113Nm Transmission  5-speed MT/AMT 5-speed MT/AMT 5-speed MT/AMT 5-speed MT/AMT Renault Triber Maruti Suzuki Swift Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Maruti Suzuki Ignis RXL Rs 6.18 lakh     Delta: Rs 6.14 lakh RXT Rs 6.68 lakh VXI: Rs 6.66 lakh Magna: Rs 6.45 lakh Zeta: Rs 6.37 lakh RXZ: Rs 7.22 lakh  ZXI: Rs 7.25 lakh Sportz: Rs 7.06 lakh Alpha: Rs 7.20 lakh     Asta: Rs 7.70 lakh     ZXI+: Rs 8.02 lakh     Note: Above are the ex-showroom Delhi prices of AMT variants  The numbers above reveal that the Triber with its smallest engine also displaces the lowest power and torque amount. It’s rather odd that the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios has the same numbers as the Maruti siblings. All four vehicles get a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard and the option of a 5-speed AMT. As far as the most affordable AMT car is concerned, the Ignis takes the cake but by a narrow margin. Both the Triber and the Ignis have almost similar entry as well as top-spec pricing.  The Hyundai Grand i10 and the Swift are closer in variant-to-variant pricing but the latter commands a bit more premium on all the occasions.  The Maruti Swift comes at the steepest price among all the offerings here.  The ace up the Triber’s sleeve, however, is its modularity and three-row seating which none of the vehicles can even touch. It can turn from a people’s carrier to a cargo carrier in little to no time.  However, the Triber’s rivals offer more in terms of features with fog lamps, steering-integrated controls, and automatic climate control. The Triber, though, gives you a couple of cooled glove boxes to keep your drinks chilled and offers AC vents for all three rows with a separate evaporator coil for the rear rows.  Triber is the only vehicle here to offer up to four airbags, two more than the rest of the hatchbacks. • It will enter the most populated segment in the country, competing with veterans such as Ford EcoSport and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza Nissan’s upcoming sub-4m SUV likely to be named Magnite.  India launch expected by September 2020.  Petrol-only offering with two engines on offer.  Most powerful turbo-petrol would get a CVT automatic option.  Prices to begin from around Rs 5.5 lakh.  Nissan India is planning to enter the crowded sub-4m SUV space with a brand new offering. Expected to be called the Magnite, the SUV was teased at a recent virtual business event, Nissan Next - Mid-term 2020-23 Plan.  Like its rivals the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Venue, the Magnite will have a crossover profile, somewhat similar to its elder sibling, the Kicks. With the limited cues from the teaser, we expect the Magnite to have a dual-tone paint scheme, large Datsun-like grille, LED headlamps, and split LED DRLs up front. The rear will have a wrap-around LED tail lamp and a spoiler.  The Magnite should be a spacious offering as it will be based on the Renault Triber’s platform. The Triber with its best-in-segment wheelbase of 2,636mm is known for a roomy cabin. Nissan is yet to reveal the Magnite’s interior. Some of the expected features include 360-degree camera support, remote engine start, large touchscreen, four airbags, and a digital instrument cluster. Nissan is unlikely to miss out on a sunroof given that most of the SUVs in the segment offer one.  As expected, the Magnite will be a petrol-only SUV like its other Renault-Nissan siblings. Engine options could be a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated unit, same as the Triber (72PS/96Nm), mated to a 5-speed manual. The other unit could be a 1.0-litre turbo that’s likely to belt out 100PS. It is expected to get the option of a CVT along with a manual.  Nissan Kicks 2020 vs Rivals: What Do The Prices Say? Internally codenamed EM2, the Nissan SUV is supposed to officially hit showrooms by September (first half of FY 2020-21). However, given the ongoing pandemic and lockdown, its launch might be pushed a little further. Its Renault counterpart (codenamed HBC) is likely to come around Diwali with completely different styling while being identical underneath. This scheme of work is similar to what Hyundai-Kia has done with Creta and Seltos.  It will take on sub-4m SUVs such as the Vitara Brezza, Venue, EcoSport, Nexon, XUV300, and Honda WR-V. While all these SUVs start from around Rs 7 lakh, Nissan is expected to play the pricing card and bring it from around the Rs 5.5-lakh mark. The Magnite will be joined by Kia Sonet in August, while Renault HBC (Kiger) will join the party soon after. • Here’s everything you wanted to know about the 2021 BMW 5 Series and 6 Series Gran Turismo  BMW has just premiered its 2021 offerings, the 5 Series and the 6 Series Gran Turismo. They’ve both undergone a nip and tuck at the front and rear ends with a generous sprinkling of tech on the inside. Let’s take a look at all the significant changes.  Exterior The first thing that jumps out at you are the wider and taller grills on both the 5 Series and the 6 Series. Thankfully, the change is nowhere near as jarring as in the 7 Series and the X7 that we saw last year.  There’s also a new headlamp design and new adaptive laser lights feature a cornering and anti-dazzling function. They are also standard on the 6GT. At the rear, there is a new 3D LED tail lamp design in the signature BMW L-shape. They look cleaner and more retro than the previous design. The M Sport package also gets a slightly redesigned rear faux diffuser, which is still in a contrasting gloss black colour.  Both cars will come in a few more colours with new sets of alloy wheel designs ranging from 18-20 inches on the 5 Series to 17-20 inches on the Gran Turismo.  Interiors The tech on the inside takes a bigger step forward with a new BMW operating system and more driver assistance features that will update itself on the fly. Even the BMW personal assistant is promised to be more intelligent and more natural to converse with.  Both the driver information display screens and central infotainment screens are all digital with the central unit having grown in size from 10.2 inches to 12.3 inches. And finally, BMW will get both Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto and what’s even better is that both will work wirelessly.  In terms of safety, there's new steering and lane control assistance with semi-automated lane changing. There is also the remote parking assistant and the reversing assistant that we’ve already seen on the new 3 Series.  Also Read: You Can Now Buy A BMW While Sitting At Home Drivetrain  BMW is showing a clear push towards electrification with two of the new drivetrains being plug-in hybrids and three more plug-in drivetrains set to be added to the lineup in November. But with our policies favouring fully electric vehicles over plug-in hybrids, these may not make it to our shores. The 530e and the 545e are the two plug-in hybrid models in the lineup while the 520i, 530i, 540i and the 550i will be offered in global markets. The diesel burners in the range are the 520d, 530d and the 540d. In India, we expect the same 530i, 520d and 530d to be retained.  With the 6 Series GT there are multiple drivetrains on offer such as the 630i, 640i, 620d, 630d, and 640d. We expect the current 620d,630d and 630i variants to remain on offer in India. The 6 GT also gets a few more drivetrain updates in the form of 4-wheel steering and optional air suspension on all four corners (rear adaptive air suspension is standard). • The sunroof is now offered in the HTX and GTX variants as well Seltos’ feature list has been updated for 2020. Gets remote engine start feature from the key fob for automatic variants. The sunroof is now more affordable since it is offered from a lower variant for both HT Line and GT Line Seltos. No update in prices yet with Seltos still costing between Rs 9.89 lakh and Rs 17.34 lakh.  The Kia Seltos was launched in India in August 2019 and in no time it soared to the top of the segment. For 2020, Kia has slightly reshuffled the feature list to offer more in the lower variants than it did at the time of launch. The Seltos variant list is divided into two lineups: HT Line and GT Line. The 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines are offered in the HT Line variants: HTE, HTK, HTK+, HTX and HTX+. Meanwhile, the best-equipped GT Line variants (GTK, GTX and GTX+) were first reserved for the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine only. Kia later added the diesel-auto powertrain option to the top-spec GTX+ variant. Also read: Kia Seltos Variants Explained: Which One To Pick? The updated Seltos now offers front and rear USB charging ports across all variants. It also sees the addition of remote engine start from the key fob itself for all automatic variants from HTK+ onwards. Other updates to the HTK+ variant include a leatherette gear knob, gloss black dashboard, and dual muffler design. Kia now offers the Seltos with metal garnish on the climate control panel and grab handle from the HTX variant onwards. The biggest change is that the electric sunroof is now a more affordable feature along with LED room lamps that are being offered from the HTX and GTX variant onwards. They were previously restricted to the pricier HTX+ and GTX+ variants. The current prices of these variants are as follows: Variants Prices Variants Prices Seltos HTX 1.5-litre Petrol  Rs 13.09 lakh (MT)/ Rs 14.09 lakh (CVT) The HTX+ is not offered with the 1.5-litre petrol engine  N.A. • The new i20 is expected to get a digital instrument cluster as seen on the facelifted Verna The new i20 was revealed online in February 2020. The images are of the Euro-spec model. Visual changes include a new dashboard layout and neon green highlights. India-spec model expected to mirror similar changes. Likely to be priced between Rs 5.7 lakh and Rs 10 lakh. Hyundai officially revealed the third-gen i20 online in February 2020, followed by a sneak peek of its interior. While we did a ‘what to expect’ story soon after its unveiling, we are now taking a close look at its interior as the carmaker recently released multiple interior pictures and details. These images are of the Euro-spec model, but Hyundai could offer the India-bound model with an all-black interior, especially for the sportier turbo-petrol variant. The images reveal the neon green highlights that were seen in its official sketches. These can be seen on the door panels and AC vents, while the gear knob, seats, and steering cover get neon green stitching. The India-spec turbo variant could get red highlights like the Verna and Nios/Aura. Pictured: Hyundai Verna instrument cluster Apart from the highlights, the new i20 also sports two screens: a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The India-spec model, however, is expected to miss out on both these screens and come with a digital instrument cluster (similar to the facelift Verna) and an 8-inch infotainment system.  The new dashboard layout, however, should be similar on the India-spec model. It features horizontal lines all the way across making it appear more spacious than before. The AC vents are neatly integrated into the new layout with the climate controls placed under them. The third-gen i20 also features ambient lighting in the footwells and door storage areas. Other than this, it will also come with wireless charging, an 8-speaker Bose sound system with a subwoofer, and Hyundai’s BlueLink connected car tech. As per Hyundai, the new i20 will have a boot space of 351 litres, 66 litres more than its outgoing model. It will be powered by a range of BS6 engines: a 1.2-litre petrol, a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel in India. Internationally, the turbo-petrol engine option will also feature 48V mild-hybrid tech which is not expected to be offered here. The 1.2-litre petrol unit will be mated to a 5-speed manual while the turbo-petrol and diesel engines will be paired to a 6-speed manual, each with its own automatic transmission option. Hyundai is expected to price the third-gen i20 from Rs 5.7 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. The new i20 is expected to arrive here around the festive season. It will rekindle its rivalry with the Maruti Suzuki Baleno/Toyota Glanza, VW Polo, Tata Altroz, and Honda Jazz. In other news, Hyundai also released a teaser video of the i20N which is expected to produce over 200PS of power. • It could be based on a Peugeot-Citroën platform Fiat boss confirms new Punto hatchback is under development. FCA is in the process of a merger with French auto conglomerate Groupe PSA.  It could allow Fiat to base the new Punto on PSA’s smallest modular platform (CMP). PSA will enter India with Citroën in early 2021 with a locally assembled mid-size SUV. Citroën is expected to localise the CMP platform for its second offering. The Fiat Punto has been absent from the European market since around 2018 but it was only officially discontinued in India in April 2020. Now, the Italian hatchback could return as a new one has been confirmed to be under development. In a recent report, Fiat Automobiles’ chief executive Olivier François said, “It’s not a mystery. That project has been postponed continuously. Now it is under development. But it would be premature to speak of this model. We will have a B-sector[premium hatchback], for sure.” The Punto’s resurrection could be the result of the upcoming merger between the Italian-American conglomerate Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and French conglomerate Groupe PSA. These two automotive giants have plenty of tech to share between them including new modular platforms. The Groupe PSA’s recently developed Common Modular Platform (CMP), its smallest modular platform, could be the basis for a new Fiat Punto. It is the same platform that underpins the latest Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa, peppy family hatchbacks available in the European markets. In terms of powertrains, the new-gen Fiat Punto based on the CMP platform could be offered in both EV and combustion-engine variants, just like the 2020 Peugeot 208 (pictured below).  Fiat could bring this new-gen Punto to India as well since Groupe PSA is poised to begin India operations too. PSA will enter India with the Citroën brand in early 2021 by launching the locally assembled C5 Aircross mid-size SUV to rival the recently launched Skoda Karoq. The following product from Citroën will also come in 2021 and will make its global debut in India with heavy localisation. This second product is expected to be based on the CMP platform as going forward, PSA plans to have limited modular platforms.  Jeep is the only active FCA brand in India at the moment but since Fiat has not packed up in its entirety, the Italian brand could revive itself. The new hatchback may not even carry on the Punto badge and could get a new name altogether. If launched, it could take on the likes of the next-gen Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz, new Honda Jazz, next-gen Volkswagen Polo and upcoming rivals from Skoda, Kia and maybe Citroen too. • Expect the 2020 Compass to get a 12.3-inch touchscreen with internet-enabled connected technology Facelifted Jeep Compass global unveil on 4 June. It will get a variety of visual updates, new features and a more powerful petrol engine.  India launch likely in early 2021.  Expect a minor price hike over the existing range of Rs 16.49 lakh to Rs 24.99 lakh. After riding a wave of success for the past three years, Jeep is going to deal out a facelift to its (and FCA’s) highest-selling car in India, the Compass. The update will be revealed on June 4 and if the invite is anything to go by, the Compass is set to get comprehensive cosmetic and technological upgrades. We have seen a few Compass test mules which hint towards a major reprofiling of the fascia, along with slight updates to the side and rear profile. Expect the 2020 Compass to jump to LED illumination units for the exterior from its current bi-xenon headlamps with halogen daytime running lamps. Other top hat bits are going to bear slight changes over the existing model. Things are expected to take a huge step up on the inside with the addition of a massive 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. Powered by the UConnect 5 operating system, it could also feature an eSIM-based connected technology similar to the ones on Hyundai and Kia cars. So you’ll be able to remote start your Compass and fiddle around with AC from a distance through a smartphone app. The existing unit is 8.4-inches and runs the UConnect 4 system.   We also expect a rise in features count with equipment like ventilated seats, fully digital instrument cluster, heads-up display and a premium sound system (from Beats). All these are certain to up the Jeep’s value quotient if the prices aren’t inflated after the launch as well. The new Compass will continue to run the 2.0-litre multijet diesel engine which gets a 6-speed MT and a 9-speed automatic transmission. Jeep is likely to introduce a new 1.3-litre Firefly petrol engine internationally but India could continue with the existing 1.4-litre multi-air petrol engine. The Compass facelift is expected to launch early next year. It could bear a minor price hike over the existing variants which range between Rs 16.49 lakh and Rs 24.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It will renew its rivalry with the new MG Hector, Tata Harrier, Skoda Karoq and the Hyundai Tucson.
